What comes to mind when you think of this phrase:

An entrepreneur is someone who…

Chances are, your mind jumped right in to finish the statement.

We all have an idea of what it takes to be a real entrepreneur. Even if you already own a business, it’s easy to feel like you haven’t made it as an entrepreneur until you reach some unofficial standard you’ve set for yourself.

There is no doubt that our #KajabiHeroes are succeeding at entrepreneurship. But the journey of an entrepreneur isn’t as simple as getting a certificate, earning a qualification, or even getting that awesome #KajabiHero t-shirt.

So what does it take? What qualities or accomplishments make someone a real entrepreneur?

Maybe you think it’s the amount of money you make, how big your list is, or having the lifestyle you always wanted that make you worthy of the title.

But have you ever thought that being an entrepreneur is something deeper than all that?

Jennifer Trask is a great example of what it means to be a successful entrepreneur. We sat down with her for an exclusive interview, and there is so much you can learn from her story.

In this post, we’re going to dig even deeper into her insights.

Here’s what I’ll cover:

  • Jennifer’s story, and how she got where she is now.
  • Her biggest three mistakes she made in her journey.
  • Plus, I take some important points from the interview that you can apply in your own journey.

By the end of this post you’ll learn the essential qualities you need to make it as an entrepreneur. And what it really means to own a business. (Hint: It’s not about the numbers, influence, and awesome lifestyle.)

How Jennifer Found Success With Kajabi

Jennifer always wanted to travel.

Even before she started making money online, she loved seeing new places and living abroad. So, she knew that building an online business was a must for the nomadic lifestyle she wanted.

But even after she started her business, despite living the lifestyle, something was off.

She was moving too fast. She was living how she wanted before she was in the right place. And even though, from the outside looking in, it appeared as if she was living her dreams, and “made it” as an entrepreneur…

Her business was paying the price.

Jennifer was using travel as a way to procrastinate from what really mattered in her journey. I know that can be a huge thing to try and wrap your head around! But if you give yourself enough time to process it, her situation makes a lot of sense.

She may have arrived from an outsider’s perspective, but she was keeping her business from thriving. Traveling too soon limited her business from what it could be, so she went back home and placed some (temporary) roots.

Jennifer Channeled Discipline And Focus to Grow Her Career

If you think that’s boring, then give Jennifer’s interview another run-through.

There is nothing boring about what she does. She’s as free-spirited as they come, but she still realized that discipline was the only way to get where she wanted to be.

As a result of all this focus and discipline, Jennifer’s coaching business grew to its limit. And she realized that coaching her clients one on one; there wasn’t any more she could do to expand her business.

We are all limited in the amount of time, resources, and energy we have.

So instead of pushing herself harder. Jennifer started creating courses for coaches on Kajabi. She could still get valuable information out there without spreading herself too thin.

With Kajabi, Jennifer found her journey go beyond what she could accomplish on her own.

And her business is only growing.

From A Traveling Procrastinator to Successful Entrepreneur

How did Jennifer radically change the course of her business?

How do you go from literally, leaving the country to procrastinate to living up to your potential as an entrepreneur?

Today, I’m going to go over some essential qualities that you need to have as an entrepreneur. (And the best part: none of these traits have to come naturally to you.)

An Entrepreneur is Someone Who is Disciplined

What comes to mind when you hear that word? What is your gut reaction?

Discipline.

I know for me, even after all I’ve experienced in my own journey, that word still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

But here’s the deal:

Discipline is essential to the life of an entrepreneur.

Without discipline you will not unlock the freedom entrepreneurship has to offer. It may seem like discipline and freedom are opposites, but in reality, they are linked to each other.

Self-control doesn’t always come naturally for people. (Um, guilty…) And the truth is, everyone has a limited supply throughout the day.

But there is good news! You can train yourself to have more discipline available to you.

A lot of different factors can either boost or deplete your willpower. And just like you can train and develop your muscles, you can also build up your self-discipline to work for your business. Here are some practical ways you can increase your discipline.

1. Getting More Sleep

A lot of people are proud of the fact that they can run on 4 hours of sleep a night and still get things done in their business. And they probably aren’t lying. But the biggest impact lack of sleep has on the brain is the ability to focus. If you haven’t had enough sleep the part of the brain (the amygdala) that refocuses your thoughts can shut down.

So how much sleep do you really need?

Before you chime in with the conventional “8 hours every night” answer…

I hate to break it to you, but that is a myth. Too much sleep can cause your body harm too. (It may even have a worse impact on your health.)

So what’s the answer?

Studies show that people who get 6 and a half to 7 and a half hours of sleep every night live longer, and have a lower risk of insomnia.

If you want to grow your self-discipline make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep. Not too little. Not too much. Find your sweet spot and make sure you get that amount of sleep every night.

2. Exercise Regularly

Regular exercise is so important to physical and mental health. Exercise reduces stress and releases endorphins. But I’m not talking about hitting the gym for hours until you feel like you’ll pass out once a month.

The important part of is consistency.

Even if it’s a few minutes a couple of times a day, get your body moving, and you may see that your self-control and business starts gaining traction. (Jennifer likes to use an app called 7 Minute Workout. Anyone can squeeze in 7 minutes to take care of themselves every day.)

3. Eating Right

This may seem like a no-brainer, but there is science behind this. When your blood glucose levels are low, you have a harder time with self-discipline. This applies to every area of your life. Even when it comes to your entrepreneurial journey.

I know how easy it is to get caught up in an important project. But when you get so wrapped up in something that you forget to eat regularly, it can cause you to get less done than if you took a break to eat lunch or grab a healthy snack.

It may seem counter-productive to stop working on your business to take care of these things, but when you take care of yourself, your journey as an entrepreneur will be easier.

An Entrepreneur is Someone Who Is Focused

You may think working hard is how you measure your discipline as a business owner. But you can overwork yourself on things that don’t really get you closer to your goals.

On the other side of the coin, you can spend your time doing something that is in your goals for life, but it’s not the right time. Like Jennifer and her dreams of traveling.

Either way, discipline without focus can have you going full steam ahead in the wrong direction.

Focus is like discipline; you have to exercise it to get good at it.

Make it a habit to constantly evaluate where your time is going. Dedicate yourself to activities that get you closer to your goals, and be honest with yourself if you need to pass something along to someone else.

You do not have to go it alone. And the truth is, most successful entrepreneurs are not flying solo. Teaming up with others can help you move faster in your business.

Ways you can prioritize and team up with others to cultivate focus in your business:

  • Join a mastermind group.
  • Hire a business coach.
  • Go to events.
  • Outsource. (Jennifer’s favorite place to hire out tasks is Fiverr. She outsourced some great design work for a budget-friendly price.)

Stay Tuned Into Who You Are

Pay attention to your gut.

Focus and intuition work together. One without the other can make your business unbalanced.

Every entrepreneur's journey is unique. So owning a successful business isn’t a one size fits all formula. Even if something works for someone else, if it doesn’t feel right, don’t force yourself into a mold that doesn’t fit you and your business.

Use your intuition to guide your focus.

An Entrepreneur is Someone Who Builds Confidence Through Action

If you’re waiting to be confident enough to start your journey as an entrepreneur, you may be waiting indefinitely.

Unconfidence and self-doubt are feelings that you can only overcome by working through them. But being unconfident is a good sign that you are about to step out of your comfort zone and do something important. Inaction will only feed into your self-doubt.

I know what you’re thinking.

But, what if I make a huge mistake?

What if I told you mistakes are just another part of the journey? What if I said that mistakes don’t mean you won’t be successful?

Jennifer is candid about her mistakes. In case you missed them in the interview here’s a list of her three biggest mistakes she made in her journey.

  • She didn’t believe in the power of what she does sooner.
  • Her first launch didn’t make any money.
  • She started traveling too soon.

But you know what?

She still became a #KajabiHero.

You don’t have to let your mistakes define you as a business owner. No matter how defeated you may feel, or how badly you believe you messed up, you have the power to pick yourself back up and move forward.

This is What Being a Kajabi Hero is All About

An entrepreneur is someone who starts their business and realizes that it’s a journey. It takes time. And you may never feel like you’ve “arrived.” But that doesn’t change the fact that, when you have that dream inside of you and you act on it… you are an entrepreneur.
