How do you rate the effectiveness of your team?

Even if you don’t have a team yet, what comes to mind when you think of an effective team?

How much money can they make you? How well they get along? Or maybe even how much work they take off your shoulders?

Team building can be intimidating for entrepreneurs of all stages in their businesses. But once you know how to build an effective team, the process is doable for entrepreneurs of all kinds.

Here’s the deal:

Part of scaling up your business means that eventually, you need a solid team on board. Having good people on your team will help grow your business faster than you ever could alone.

Today I want to introduce two Kajabi Heroes who know how important it is to build an effective team. We sat down with Leo who started out with his partner Corey as a two man show and grew to a team of 20 people working toward a common goal.

And when you combine an effective team with the power of Kajabi there is no limit to how you can scale your business.

Here’s what I’ll cover today:

  • How Leo and Corey started their business with a vision and grew to a powerful team with the help of Kajabi.
  • What it takes to build an effective team, and qualities to look for in potential team members.
  • When to know when it’s time to add new team members. (Even if you don’t have any team members yet.)
  • Plus some bonus tips and tricks on how Kajabi can make training new team members a seamless transition.

By the end of this post, you’ll get a glimpse into how Leo and Corey reached Kajabi Hero status and used Kajabi to build a successful team. And I’ll break down how you can replicate this process for your own business.

If you already have a team, or if you are a solo act looking to scale your business, this post will show you how to get the right people on your team and how Kajabi can revolutionize this process.

How Two Entrepreneurs With A Heart For Start-Ups Became Kajabi Heroes

Leo and Corey originally had a background in finance and real estate. But when they discovered the start-up niche, they knew they were exactly where they needed to be in their business.

Banks don’t make a habit of looking out for the little guy. Because the spotlight is normally on bigger corporations and companies, Leo and Corey felt that someone had to find these smaller startups the funding they needed to get their businesses up off the ground.

If the banks wouldn’t help these entrepreneurs get the credit they needed, then they would.

So Leo and Corey started getting their hands on the best education they could to help serve their clients and establish themselves as experts in the industry.

But they didn’t stop there.

After finding Kajabi, they realized they could go the extra mile for their customers. Not only could they get their clients the funding they needed, but they could also provide education through Kajabi.

This gave their business a competitive edge, and from there business only expanded.

Since finding Kajabi and leveraging its capabilities in unique ways, their business has grown over ten times.

They started out as a partnership: two guys helping clients that banks would normally turn away for funding. They didn’t set out to grow their business into what it is now.

Their team has grown to 20 people, and they are constantly looking for new ways to utilize Kajabi in their business to better serve their clients. Kajabi has unlocked an entire world of possibilities for Leo and Corey.

Fundwise Capital has evolved way beyond just another funding portal for start-ups. On top of the unique education they provide, they already have a vision for even more products to better serve their customers in the future.

So how did they do this?

A big part of how far Leo and Corey have come in their business is just like Leo said in the interview:

They got the right people on the bus.

How did they use Kajabi to build a team that is so good at taking care of their customers?

Let’s take a closer look at what goes into building an effective team. Then break down how Leo and Corey are implementing Kajabi into their team building tactics.

What is Your Vision of a Successful Team?

What makes a good team?

Of course, a good team will help you build your business, make life a little easier for you, and they need to get along.

But what does it take to get these kind of results from your team?

Let’s take a look at some overarching goals, and what you are trying to accomplish in building a killer team like Leo and Corey have.

An effective team works well together with a common goal.

This goes beyond having your people get along. It’s all about everyone having a clear focus, working together like cogs in a machine. Each person supports and works with each other to move forward as a unit.

A team has passion.

Some people just have a knack. And even if they are inexperienced, chances are you can see the glimpses of natural talent that can be cultivated and encouraged into a real skill. But the biggest part of this factor is making it a goal to build a team of individuals who are passionate about your business.

If Leo and Corey had a team of people who weren’t fired up about their vision, and they were just there to collect a paycheck, they wouldn’t be where they are right now.

Serving your clients and customers is the driving force behind any successful team.

Leo and Corey started their business to give start-ups a chance when no one else would. And it’s not a surprise at all that his team is passionate about serving their clients.

You can have the best, well-oiled team around, but if they aren’t serving your customers, they aren’t going to be as effective as people who truly care about your clients.

Nothing scales a business faster than serving people excellently and going above and beyond to meet their needs.

How To Know When It’s Time To Build (or Expand) Your Team

Any entrepreneur will ask themselves this question at some point.

And odds are when you start asking yourself this; you will feel a ton of internal resistance to the idea of hiring someone to help you with your business. (Especially if you haven’t hired anyone before.)

There is a disease that is common among entrepreneurs.

Jack of all trades syndrome.

A lot of entrepreneurs are self-made. If that’s you, odds are you worked hard and juggled a bunch of different elements to start your business.

This may have gotten your business up off the ground in those early days. But it can also hurt your business if you think doing everything yourself is sustainable long-term.

Trying to do everything yourself can actually stunt the growth of your business, and limit how well you can serve and connect with your customers.

So much will start to fall through the cracks, and delivering value will get harder and harder.

Even if you already have a team, it is so important to recognize when your business has grown beyond what you can reasonably handle.

So how do you know when it’s time?

There isn’t a clear-cut answer to this question. Every business is different, but here are some signs to look for to help you make that decision.

  • You’re overworked and burned out. When your business has grown to this point, you're headed to a dark place fast. Nothing will zap away the passion for your business quicker than this. If you feel like nothing more than a hamster in a wheel, it may be time to expand so you can focus on your passion, and grow your business.

  • Your work is starting to suffer. You are awesome at what you do! But when you are stuck in survival mode it’s hard to put your best into your work and your customers. The thought of growing your business feels impossible because you can barely keep up with things as it is!

  • There’s never enough time in the day. The truth is, we all have the same amount of hours in a day. Owning a business takes a lot of differents elements coming together to keep things running smoothly.

Bookkeeping, budgeting, customer service, phone calls, emails… no wonder it’s easy to spread yourself too thin. If you are running out of time to do what matters to your business, it may be time to outsource some of those time-sucking tasks to someone else.

A lot of business owners see expanding their team as a new expense. But when you reach your breaking point, sometimes you can’t afford to not hire some help. The idea of giving up control (even a small part) of your business is scary.

But it may be just what your business needs to expand and grow.

What To Look For In A New Team Member

Before we dive into this section, I’m gonna level with you.

Team building takes time.

It’s a process that you don’t want to rush, even if you desperately need the help. Like Leo said in his interview, you need the right people. And to find the right people you need to approach it carefully.

That being said, don’t let fear hold you back from this process. There’s a huge difference between executing smart decisions wisely and procrastinating out of fear.

So if you’re ready to take that next step, and expand (or start building) your team, here’s what you need to look for in potential employees.

A passion for what your business stands for.

You have a vision for your business. And part of being a leader means sharing that vision with your team. But some people, no matter how talented or qualified they are, just can’t get on board with your vision.

But if you can find someone who is passionate about your business and vision, (even if they aren’t technically as “qualified” as other candidates) you know they are all in, and will go the extra mile for your customers.

Actively leverages their skills.

Talent is another factor to consider, but honestly, it’s not a deal breaker. (You’ll see why in the next point.) You want to look at how they use their skills, and if they strive to utilize them to their fullest potential.

Some people have a lot of natural talent and skills, but they don’t actively pursue them.

You don’t want people on your team that you have to babysit throughout the day. So look for someone who is proactive with their skills, and can take the initiative on their assigned tasks with little guidance from you.

Flexibility and teachability.

Natural talent is a huge asset, but the biggest factor to consider in someone who is skilled at a certain task (or shows some seeds of greatness despite inexperience) is how teachable they are.

I’ve seen a lot of extremely talented people who I’d never consider for my team because they are set in their ways and inflexible. I know they would butt heads with anyone who tries to offer guidance.

On the other hand, I have seen people with a not so impressive resume, but so much potential thrive and excel with a little guidance because they were open to learn and adapt.

And you also need to consider if a potential team member is flexible enough to be a good team player (even if you are starting out by adding one person to your team.)

Keep the endgame in mind. Everyone needs to get along and work together to serve your clients and customers better. To do this well, flexibilty is key.

Has long-term potential.

When you look at someone’s past, you can learn a lot about a person, especially work history. You are looking for people who are on board for the long haul.

And even if you’re outsourcing temporary projects, you need team members who will see it through to the end.

Listen to your gut.

Pay attention to your initial feelings about possible hires. If you see potential in someone: they are flexible, and are passionate about your vision, then an underwhelming list of references, or work history doesn’t always mean you need to pass them by.

On the other side of the coin, if your gut is telling you to steer clear then pay attention to red flags.

Finding the right fit for your business may take more time initially, but careful selection of new team members will pay off in the long run.

Once you find the right person (or people) the process only gets easier from there. (And if you let Kajabi help you with the training process it will be a breeze!)

How Kajabi Can Help You Train An Effective Team (With The Least Amount of Effort)

I love how Leo and Corey use Kajabi to train their team!

Once you find the right people for your business, you can unlock the power of the platform to make the training process flow smoothly.

Imagine if training a new team member was as simple as sitting them in front of a computer, while you continued about your day.

With Kajabi you can record all of the training new team members need to know and automate as much of the process as you can.

Leo and Corey make sure to do this with each team member before they ever start handling their clients. (Even James Wedmore uses this awesome onboarding strategy in his business.)

So if you’re on the fence about using Kajabi to start and grow your business give it a try for 14 days. And you may be surprised at how easy it is to scale your business and grow your team with Kajabi!
